I wanted to show her my whole school, which was very beautiful and would be called Stalingrad when I was president, after boarding school, and Uncle Jos would get me elected. Isabelleâs hands were cold. Maybe my papa was a Dago? Then we arrived at my teacherâs, who has always been my favorite teacher because she was the only one at the school. Her husband was in charge of soccer with her, I was the U10-U11 substitute, and he carted the trowels around in his car when we went to unearth the deputyâs bones. He arranged them with the help of a big book to try to make a complete cadaver out of them. Isabelle put Edgar on her lap, but she couldnât see much over my ears, so Mme. Lydie Vidonne told me, Edgar, go get your notebook to show it to your maman.
âBoth of them?â
âYes, Edgar. I would also like to see your drawings.â
And then she saw how Edgar was going to be the president, except for the daughter of the mayor who came from Lyon who doesnât count because she was in the wrong majority. Then Isabelle looked at my drawings, I donât remember which ones, in any case I had âgoodâ and âvery goodâ written on them in colored pencil or even in HB pencil. Isabelle was happy, she turned to Auntie Gina, and Mme. Lydie Vidonne, who had made tea in the school kettle, smiled. Edgar was thriving.
Then I had to go out into the courtyard, from the green gate I kept an eye on my green bicycle too, I wanted it to last. It was really a good day. Maman was happy with the poppies. Mme. Nguyen came out in her white lab coat and she waved to me lightly, with her rings on her fingers and her magic potions that she made so that people would screw her anyway, itâs André who had stolen them from his father.
âHello Madame Nguyen.â
âWhat are you doing here, Edgar?â
âI came to see the teacher with my maman.â
âYour maman? Is your maman here?â
âYes, her name is Isabelle, Madame Nguyen.â
âSay hello to Auntie Gina and your maman for me. She brought her potted plants inside to take cuttings.â
Sometimes, Madame Clarisse Georges, I have strange shivers. I donât quite know how to explain it to you. I heard Isabelle talking with Mme. Lydie Vidonne, the schoolyard was empty, and I could hear everything. I played Jailbreak by myself. With the kids, I wasnât too keen on being prisoner. But that day, the ball always missed me. I thought to myself that I could escape anytime I wanted. And then, later, my bicycle started to roll on its own and it went to wait for me at the entrance, by the little door to the schoolyard. The big one was kept closed because of the neighborhood thieves, except when Monsieur Vidonne took out his Renault 4L. Then, all of a sudden, that was it, I couldnât hear anything anymore, Maman had me step outside, I didnât have good grades in drawing.
